Rigby's Bailey Guthrie finds herself in a pretty good situation half way through the 2008 National High School Finals Rodeo. Guthrie holds a 20-point lead in the girls all-around at the completion of the first go, which ended Wednesday morning. She has 280 points. Her closest competitor Tyesha Oppenheimer of Redmond, Utah has 260. And Guthrie could very well have an even bigger lead had she not struggled in the pole bending event. She sits in 37th place in the pole bending after the first go. However, Guthrie has more than made up for that in her other events. She is currently sixth in the goat-tying after posting a time of 8.460 seconds in her first go. Guthrie is also sitting eighth in the barrels with a time of 17.467. South Fremont's Makale Miller is finding the competition to be just a little bit tougher. In three events - the pole bending, barrels and cow cutting - Miller has finished no better than 55th. She was 75th in the poles after her first go, 55th in the cow cutting and 72nd in the barrels. It would seem unlikely that Miller will be in contention for any national titles. The top 20 in each event at the conclusion of the week will advance to Saturday evening's final event. Several other cowboys and cowgirls from Idaho have put up some good showings in the first part of the week
